A Tidy Desk Charging Setup [USB-C Hub, USB Power Strip, 3-in-1: Fewer Cables]

Is your desk buried in cables and chargers? The more devices—laptop, iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, tablet—the more wiring. The short answer: consolidate power into a USB power strip or a multi-port charger, make the iPhone family drop-and-charge with a 3-in-1, and reduce the laptop’s connections to one with a USB-C hub. This guide lays out the approach with four tools and the owner’s notes on the hub actually in use.

The short answer: picks by role

  • Add ports to the laptop (display, USB-A): Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1)—owner uses this. AmazonRakuten
  • Consolidate power (AC + USB): Anker 615 USB Power Strip (GaNPrime 65W)—outlets and USB-C in one. AmazonRakuten
  • Drop-and-charge iPhone, Watch, AirPods: Anker MagGo 3-in-1 Stand (Qi2)—three cables disappear. AmazonRakuten

Approach: 1) consolidate power → 2) go drop-and-charge → 3) reduce laptop connections to one—in that order for the biggest cable reduction.
Verification: the Anker 332 hub is owner-used (hands-on); the rest is compared from public (stated) specs.

The short answer: four tools and their roles

ToolRoleWhat it removes
USB power stripOutlets plus USB-C/USB-A in oneAC adapters
Multi-port (GaN) chargerLaptop, tablet, and phone from one unitChargers
3-in-1 wireless chargeriPhone, Watch, AirPods drop-and-chargeThree cables
USB-C hubDisplay, USB-A, and power to the laptop over one cableLaptop-side cables

Think in two layers: the power side (strip / multi-port charger) and the device side (3-in-1 / hub). Secure outlets and output on the power side; cut the number of plug-ins on the device side.

Step 1: consolidate power (strip or multi-port charger)

Many desks have only two outlets underneath. A power strip with USB-C adds outlets while charging directly from USB-C/USB-A, cutting AC adapters. See choosing a USB power strip.

To include the laptop at high output, put one GaN multi-port charger (100W class or more) on the desk and run everything from it. For GaN, see what a GaN charger is; for the 240W class, USB PD 3.1 240W chargers.

Step 2: make the iPhone family drop-and-charge (3-in-1)

The three cables for iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods vanish with a 3-in-1 wireless charger. On a desk, a stand keeps the screen visible. See best 3-in-1 wireless chargers and Anker vs Belkin 3-in-1.

Step 3: reduce the laptop to one cable (USB-C hub)

A thin laptop with only USB-C means hunting for an adapter every time you need a monitor, a USB stick, or wired LAN. A USB-C hub gives you display out (HDMI), USB-A, and pass-through power over one cable.

● Owner uses this

The owner uses the Anker 332 hub with a MacBook. Since the MacBook only has USB-C, it's especially handy at client sites where the monitor cable is HDMI-only: plug USB-C into the MacBook and run HDMI from the hub to the monitor, and you're never stuck for display output on the go. It also connects USB (Type-A) devices like a USB drive—adding the ports you need from one connection is genuinely useful on a thin MacBook.

For port configurations and pass-through output, see choosing a USB-C hub.

Anker 615 USB Power Strip (GaNPrime 65W)

Two outlets plus two USB-C and one USB-A in one unit—fixes the outlet shortage under the desk. For several large laptops at once, pair it with a multi-port charger.

FAQ

Q. Hub or power strip first? A. It depends on what’s piling up. Many AC adapters → the strip; many cables into the laptop → the hub. If both, start with the power side (strip); the effect is easiest to feel.

Q. Does a 3-in-1 need a power adapter? A. Most require a USB-C power adapter (included or not, and the required output, vary by model). Powering it from the strip’s USB-C port removes one more adapter.
